With the beginning of new year, we are introducing a new section of sports current affairs, wherein we would compile recent events in sports fortnightly, for the convenience of our valuable readers. In this article, we present to you sports news from Jan 01 2014 to Jan 15, 2014 as Sports News January 2014 (Part – 1 ).We would be coming with Sports News January 2014 (Part -2) by the end of January 2014.

Corey Anderson smashes fastest ODI Century:

New Zealand all rounder Corey Anderson hit the fastest century in ODI cricket history against West Indies in Queenstown, New Zealand on Ist Jan 2014. Left handed Anderson made his hundred off just 36 balls, beating the previous record held by Shahid Afridi, Pakistani all rounder who took 37 balls to reach 3 figures against Sri Lanka in 1996 in Nairobi, Kenya. New Zealand won by 159 runs after keeping West Indies to 124/5 in 21 overs.(Overs got reduced to 21 from 50 due to rain).

India clinches under 19 Asia Cricket Cup:

On 4th January, India defeated the defending co-champion, Pakistan to win Under 19 Asia Cricket Cup in the final match played at Sharjah Cricket stadium in Abu Dhabi. The Under 19 Indian squad led by captain Vijay Zol beat Pakistan by 40 runs to grab the title. Centuries from two Indian skippers, Vijay Zol and Sanju Samson led India into a strong position and hence made victory. In 2012, Under 19 Asia cricket Cup trophy was shared between India & Pakistan as scores got tied on 282.

Ashes Series

Australia defeated England by 5-0 in Ashes series thereby accomplishing a clean sweep/whitewash against England. Man of the match for the 5th test match was Ryan Harris and Man of the series was won by Mitchell Johnson, Australian pace bowler. With this 5-0 whitewash, Australia climbs to 3rd spot in World Test Ranking.

Sports News January 2014 – Tennis

Stanislas Wawrinka clinched his second Chennai Open Title

World No. 8 Swiss tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka clinched his fifth ATP World Tour title and second Chennai open trophy by defeating Roger-Vasselin of  in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 in the final match at Nangambakkam Tennis Stadium in Chennai on 5th January 2014. Later on , in doubles final, fourth seeds Johan Brunstorm of Sweden and Federik Nielsen of Denmark defeated the unseeded Croation pair of Mate Pavic and Marin Draganja 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.

Serena Williams won Brisbane International Title(Women’s Title)

USA’s sensational tennis player Serena Williams won Brisbane International title in Queensland, Australia on 4th January 2014. Serena Williams defeated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 2nd rank holder in the world. Serena won 14 matches out of 17 against Victoria. Recently Serena Williams won the Female Athlete of the Year award given by Associated Press in December 2013. In the year 2013, Serena won 11 titles and got World No. 1 Rank.

 Lleyton Hewitt won Brisbane International Title (Men’s Title)

Australia’s tennis player Lleyton Hewitt clinches Brisbane International Title in Queensland, Australia on 4th January 2014 by defeating Roger Federer in straight sets of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. It was his 29th career title.

sports news january 2014 (Part- 1)Aditya Joshi became World No.1 Junior shutler

17 year old Aditya Joshi from Dhar, Madhya Pradesh,became the first Indian male junior badminton player to be ranked 1 in the world. This Ranking has been given by World Badminton Federation(WBF). Aditya was on 11th position till November 2013, but he managed to jump ahead all the players by achieving 18,776 points. Earlier Aditya was the national champion in 2013. Now he successfully promoted himself in the queue of prominent Badminton players of India like, Saina Nehwal , PV Sindhu, Jwala Gutta etc.

Nikhat Zareen won Gold at the 3rd Nation’s Cup International Boxing Tournament

Nikhat Zareen (17), former junior World Champion of India grabs the Gold medal at the 3rd Nation’s Cup International Boxing Tournament held in Novi Sad, Serbia on 12th Jan 2014 by defeating Paltceva Ekaterina of Russia in the 51 Kg weight Category. Earlier , Nikhat Zareen had won Silver medal in Youth World BoXing Championship held in Bulgaria in 2013.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the FIFA Ballon d’Or Award 2013

This year Cristiano Ronaldo won the FIFA Ballon d’Or award on 13th January 2014 beating his great rival Lionel Messi and France’s Franck Ribery in a poll. Voting was done by National Team captains and coached in FIFA member countries.
