Copper Age

The First metal discovered by the Man was Copper.The people of  Neolithic age used copper & bronze (Copper Plus Tin) for their utilitarian tools.Thats why this period is called as Copper Age or Chalcolithic age. 

In Copper age, we will discuss about the most important civilization- Harappan Cvilization or Indus Valley Civilization. But before studying Harappan Civilization let us discuss the features of chalcolithic age.

This age is also called as BRW age (Black on Red Ware Age).

Features of Copper Age/Chalcolithic Age

Man gained knowledge of seasonal crops (before chalcolithic age knowledge of Agriculture was there but man did not know anything about seasonal crops),cultivated kharif & rabi crops in copper age. Man was making Fortified Settlement (Boundary walls around home & villages.

Evidences of Copper Age in India

1-Inamgaon (near Pune) :- evidence of Moat (A dwell filled with water around the towns). It was the earliest evidence of Fortification with Moat in the world.

2- Daimabad (near Nasik):-  four bronze objects were found on this site. These were:-

a) Elephant

b) Rhinoceros

c) Buffalo

d) Chariot

Sites associated with Copper Age

Many sites of Copper age are found near Chhota Nagpur Plateau Region,Karnataka, Banks of river Narmada & the upper Gangetic basin.

Copper Age/ Chalcolithic age cultures of Indian subcontinent

a) Ahar culture or Banas Culture ( Southern Rajasthan)

b) Malwa Culture & Kayatha culture (Madhya Pradesh)

c)Jorwe culture & Savalda Culture (Maharashtra)
