Before discussing the Banihal Qazigund Rail Link, lets first discuss the entire Kashmir Railway Project.

The Ambitious Kashmir Railway Project is divided into Four Sections:

Recently, on 26 June 2013, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi flagged off first train connecting Banihal to Qazigund.

The Banihal Qazigund Rail link has reduced the 35 k.m distance to 18 k.m. This rail link includes, 11 k.m tunnel through Pir Panjal Range.

The Katra Banihal Section comprising the highest bridge across the Chenab River is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

What was the total cost incurred in the Banihal Qazigund rail link project?

IRCON International executed the project at a cost of Rs. 1691 Crore.

What benefits are expected of the Rail Link?

It would end the isolation of the valley at winter and speed up people to people contact across the country, besides boosting Tourism.
