Belgian Mathematician, Pierre Delinge (69) Professor of Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton, one of the celebrated mathematician of the 20th century has been awarded this year’s Prestigious Abel Prize in Mathematics.
He was being awarded for his “seminal contribution to algebraic geometry and for their transformative impact on number theory and related fields”.
What is Abel Prize ?
Abel Prize was first instituted in the year 2002 by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters.The Abel Prize is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize, which is not awarded in the field of Mathematics.
It carries a cash award of 6 million Norwegian Krone(about 1 million $).
The prize recognizes contributions of extraordinary depth and influence in mathematical sciences.
The award will be given by His Majesty King Harald V of norway at an award function in Oslo on May 21st 2013.
